Not the smallest cabin in the Alps
Running any website I guess gives you an insight into what people are thinking, searching for and, in the case of A Little Cabin in the Alps, possibly seeking extremes…
For the last couple of years since I registered the site with Google Analytics there are a few search phrases that repeatedly bring people to A Little Cabin.
“smallest cabin in the Alps” is number 1 - by a stretch. “smallest hut in the alps” and “small cabin in the alps” are running neck and neck for joint 2nd, and in 3rd place is simply “alps blog”.
It’s not to say that the website is number 1 for any of those search phrases (although it seems to appear in the top handful for “alps blog”), but those search phrases are what brings people here - whether it meets what they’re looking for or not. Most likely not for “smallest cabin in the alps” as when you search that phrase, many of the websites featuring in the top ten are essentially what I call bivy shelters in remote, unserviced positions, often above 3000m.
Depending on what search engine you use and whether or not you have the AI answers switched off or not (I have), you will get a variety of responses as to what actually is the smallest cabin in the Alps.!
You’ll find a lot of YouTube videos out there from people showing they’ve stayed in one of these places and of course it’s a magnet for Instagram selfies…
All that said, I have had a couple of people staying in the cabin this summer resulting in their finding the cabin through phrases such as “little cabin in the valley” and “cabin in the woods”. The majority of people who use the cabin however, generally come one of three ways - personal connections, word of mouth from people who’ve stayed here already, and the Dutch commercial agency nature.house
It seems many cabin lets are sourced through commercial websites such as nature house, huetten (mainly Austrian cabins) and of course Airbnb.
Of course, if you’re in any way familiar with this website, past blog posts or indeed me, then you’ll know that A Little Cabin was not (and still isn’t) intended as a commercial cabin letting gig. It’s also not a cabin in an extremely isolated position, nor is it the smallest or most basic!
Sometimes I have romantic ideas about having a cabin an hour or more walk away from the roadhead. Only the sounds of Alpine choughs and a gurgling stream in the background. No mobile phone reception. You get the idea! Sounds great for a couple of minutes before the realities of carrying food, any tools or DIY materials and strimmer motor fuel with you, dawns… It’s hard enough doing this already day in day out at the cabin which is only 10 minutes walk from the carpark, not an hour or more away…
Looks great - until… ;)
SO - no. A Little Cabin in the Alps is not the smallest in the Alps. It’s not the most isolated. It’s not the most basic.
And because of all those reasons, it’s accessible for most - physically and as well as financially.
Enjoy the rest of the summer - and keep searching….
