Transparency building community
It's becoming more recognised that transparency builds community.
Why else would creatives such as Sean Tucker share his YouTube income stream or photographer Brian Lackey his income from a photo exhibition?
Very early on in this blog I shared the process and cost of buying A Little Cabin in the Alps.
Now that I have 3 years behind me in terms of renting and costing the cabin, I'm happy to share the combined figures here - in the name of building community.
That is, after all, what the "pay as you can" system is behind - i.e. - some of those who will use the cabin are on good salaries. Others not. Either way it doesn’t matter as the idea is that everyone who stays, contributes to the costs of maintaining A Little Cabin in the Alps as they can and are able, in the knowledge that everyone benefits and sees a return on their “investment”.
Over the past 3 years, (2023, 2024, 2025) I've let the cabin for others to use - as well as myself obviously. Despite my reticence in doing this through a commercial agency, I know that my own contacts and website reach is limited. So I chose to use nature.house as well as promoting the cabin directly to family, friends, their friends etc through this website.
Over the past 3 years, the total income has been € 9534 with total expenses of € 6537
So €3000 "surplus" over 3 years!
Certainly not major money but what it has shown me is that the cabin is essentially self-finacing.
The costs cover utility bills such as water and electricity, on-going maintenance costs, cleaning between guests, local insurance and tax, and my travel costs when not using for personal stays.
In terms of the income stream, what is interesting to me is that over the past 2 years, the split between nature.house and direct bookings is 51% NH amd 49% direct.
I would love to be able to increase the direct percentage, as apart from a couple of guests, there is no feedback or building of community from commercial lets.
And that's where you come in! Would you like to stay at the cabin? Or do you have friends who would?
Feel free to spread the word and show like-minded friends who love nature, peace, and mountains how they can reconnect and take some time out.
